Sore knees walking downhill & downstairs? Strengthen them!

Michelle: Hi. I’ve been at Spice for six months. I’m really enjoying going to the gym with Sheree – she’s really flexible and always in contact, really friendly. I joined the gym because I needed to strengthen my knees which get really sore, to go on a school ski trip. And also, I’m going on a world challenge trek to Nepal and so I needed just to get some general fitness.

I’ve improved my strength and my posture.

I was experiencing a lot of knee pain, I’ve had a knee injury and some surgery, and when we go skiing I wanted to have really strong knees. So, I’ve been doing a lot of leg work and my quad strength has really improved and my knee pain has disappeared.

I went on a big five day bushwalk a couple of months ago and my body reacted really well to that. One of the things my knees have always really struggled with is walking downhill and downstairs. And I’ve been – with the functional training that she’s been pushing me to do, I’ve really noticed that I can walk downstairs now without knee pain.

And funnily enough there was a very normal, easy quad stretch that everyone probably has done in their whole life but I realised that it was really painful, but just after six months of training the pain’s gone and I can do that stretch with no problem anymore.

I am a maths teacher at a girls’ high school and I had a student come in a couple of weeks ago and ask me if I knew a stretch that could help her stretch her calf. She’s a dancer and she’d done something in her dance class the night before. And just the day before Sheree had shown me this really unusual calf stretch that I had never experienced before, and I shared it with this girl and it got her in the spot that she was a bit sore and yeah, it was good fun sharing something that I’d learned from Sheree and being at the gym, with one of my students.
