I’ve actually been coming along to Spice Fitness, well this is my third year. I started originally because my mother, who’s 86 now and has dementia, was really having a struggle with her strength and her balance. And I looked around, and Spice Fitness, Sheree being a nurse gave us the chance to safely exercise.

As well as that, I’m the kind of person that has spent the last, ten years every New Year’s Eve going, yes this next year I’m going to get fitter. I am just going to be strong and fit and it’s all going to happen. And it never ever happened until I actually discovered the strength training, which is just something that I have enjoyed hugely along the way.

A side effect has been that I have lost 10 kg in weight over the last 2.5 years, but that was never an actual goal of mine. I just wanted to be strong enough to do all the things in life that I want to do. Like lifting my grandchildren and being able to do work here in the ceramics area delivering clay.

And I have actually been able to deliver 600 kg of clay, moving it 300 kg at a time. Moving them into the van, driving them to schools, unloading them, taking them up to where they have to be, and I have never had an injury and that is actually the most important thing for me is the strength, and the confidence I’ve gained that I can do things without hurting myself.

Why didn’t I do it other times? I’ve tried going to a gym. I’ve tried going to classes. I don’t swim very well. And I just got bored when I went to other classes and what I’ve found with strength training is the short intervals and lots of variety, working different muscle groups has all worked really well for me.

I actually feel like I understand how my body is working and what I need to do to keep it in good shape.

So I’m really enjoying life with it and I’m hoping to keep going until Sheree’s really old.
